588. Halal Food: From Ghana to Tijuana

Jerry, Amina, and Maryan are a family from Ghana who make a living in Tijuana by selling healthy African food through their restaurant, Halal Food. In this narrative, Jerry highlights two key aspects: (a) how the family arrived in Tijuana through Amina, who was the first family member to come to Mexico ("Mama Africa") and began selling African food first in Tapachula and later in Tijuana; and (b) the variety of dishes they serve at their restaurant, as well as the kinds of relationships they have built in Mexico.

Along the way she was scammed by coyotes, and once on the other side, her life was characterized by insecurity. Although she was able to cross with humanitarian parole, along with her three daughters, her new husband was detained at the border.
