Coming from El Salvador, "A Friend" set out for the United States fleeing gang violence and extreme poverty, beginning his journey in the year 2000. Over nearly two decades, he faced kidnappings, extortion, human trafficking networks, and multiple deportations, each attempt more dangerous than the last. Despite repeated setbacks, he always returned with hope, until he ultimately chose to seek stability in Mexico, where he now lives with permanent legal status.

After reflecting on his experiences in transit in Part I, “A Friend” describes what for him are the causes of the problems that migrants like him face: organized crime and Bukele’s authoritarianism in El Salvador, the lack of resources and employment in Mexico, and the isolationism of President Trump in the United States. Due to this last one, “A Friend” believes that the nightmare of unemployment and inflation has replaced “the American Dream,” and that the actions of President Trump have worsened the economic situation in the region.
