During his wait with an assigned number by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, José narrates the details of his expulsion from Nicaragua after the social reform of 2018, which triggered a series of protests, from Casa del Migrante in Ciudad Juárez.

“We did not agree with what the president had decreed…so there were marches…they didn’t like the marches… and they would look for us and would send the police on us, they would take them, they would kidnap them and they would imprison them and they wouldn’t tell their families anything, and they would just take them as if they were taking an object, a dog or an animal … we decided to leave the country because we had been threatened.”
