Born in La Huerta Jalisco, Ana Garcia was brought to the United States by her mother at the age of 5 in pursuit of the American Dream. Growing up in Utah, she considered the US her home, unaware of the immigration consequences of a criminal record. Ana was separated from her five children, including a nursing infant, after being deported to Mexico in 2018. Ana’s deportation had a profound ripple effect on her family, especially her eldest daughter, Amaiah, who narrates her own challenges and responsibilities during her mother’s absence and relocation to Mexico. Despite the hardships, Ana and her children found strength in each other, and embraced the opportunity to rebuild her life in Mexico.
